Celebrity fanfare
Star-studded baseball teams put on a show for charities

EULESS - Actor Tom Arnold, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, Dallas Stars player Mike Modano and 'N Sync singer Chris Kirkpatrick raised screams from fans and money for charity Saturday during the Heroes 2002 Celebrity Baseball Game at The Parks at Texas Star.

Other celebrities included Shawn Marion of the Phoenix Suns, Cuttino Mobley of the Houston Rockets, Kirk Muller of the Dallas Stars and former baseball star Dave Parker.

"It's been a blast. It's been so much fun," Cuban said. "Most of us haven't played baseball in some 20 years. I know it's been since I was 17 that I played baseball.

"You just come out here, wear a uniform and do something for a good cause. Play in a beautiful field like the Star. Every seat seems to be taken, and that's what counts."

Arnold emceed the event, which pitted Kirkpatrick's Red Socks against Cuban's and Modano's Black Socks. The Red Socks won, 8-3, after a two-hour game. Sixty mph hardball pitches were thrown by a machine after the "pitcher" dumped a ball into it.

Thousands of people attended the event. Proceeds will go to Gilda's Club of North Texas at 2710 Oak Lawn Ave. in Dallas and to the Mike Modano Foundation. The Dallas area-based Mike Modano Foundation assists children up to age 12 who have been abused, neglected or abandoned. Gilda's Clubs are nationally known cancer support centers named for comedian Gilda Radner, who died of cancer in 1989.

Tickets were $19.50, but figures for the amount raised Saturday were not immediately available.

The event attracted fans such as songwriter Honey Wampler, who drove from Terrell hoping to see 'N Sync member J.C. Chavez. [webmaster note: no, they will never get his name right.] Instead, she got Kirkpatrick.

"I would love to talk to him, though," the 33-year-old said. "I have been harassing them for two years. I just want to see if they got any of my songs."

Sisters Chasity and Christie Jones, 21 and 17 respectively, were not picky about their 'N Sync performers.

"Hey, you know what? Any of them is fine," Chasity Jones, 21, of Wylie said with a laugh.

Chasity Jones came to see Modano and Arnold.

Christie Jones, 17, of Frisco thought 'N Sync's Chavez and Joey Fatone would show up but was impressed by Kirkpatrick's playing.

"He's kicking some serious butt, but I think he needs to keep on singing," Christie Jones said.

From his dugout, Kirkpatrick, said he was proud to play with his team.

"These guys were hitting like crazy," he said. "It's fun. ... We all went out last night, and I met all of them, and they are really cool guys."

Cuban said having Kirkpatrick and Modano on board helped the turnout.

"Obviously the girls are on Chris Kirkpatrick's side, and Mike is doing pretty good in that category too," Cuban said.

Tom Arnold - who Wampler said kept the crowd active during the game - had a lot of fun.

"We have to do a lot of these kinds of things, but this is one of the best I've ever been to," Arnold said. "The charities are great. ... The way they treat everybody. They are actually playing baseball, and it's a great thing."

Baseball Event Next Year?

Thanks Honey... I'm so glad you came and had a great time... the Mike Modano's foundation and Gilda's Club really benefited!...
I'll get your letter to Chris Kirkpatrick and I'll ask him to get to JC....

You should know that Chris called Justin Timberlake right after the game and told him that "this was the best event ever, and that both of them have to play next year" That'd be cool...

Anyway thanks for the support...

Everybody at The Parks at Texas Star was a hero on Saturday!!
